Alex's mother insisted Alex bear her last name, which she refused to change when she married. Alex's father named her Alyssandra, after a great-aunt, but when Alex was old enough to speak her mind, she insisted on being called Alex because she didn't like having a name that made her sound like a princess or a glass doll.
28 years old at the beginning of Book 1 [A Drop of Magic]. 5'8” tall, she has long, wavy, auburn hair that she often wears up in a ponytail to keep it out of her face. She has grey-blue eyes, pale skin with a smooth complexion and a scattering of freckles. She is fit/muscular, from her work as a sculptor as well as Yoga and Aikido (and in later books, training with a sword). After the events of Book 1, Alex has multiple pale scars on her left arm from elbow to wrist and an intricate tattoo that spirals up her right arm from wrist to shoulder. She values comfort over style and has a general "girl next door" look. Her preferred outfit is a T-shirt, hoodie, jeans, and hiking boots. She doesn't often wear makeup, but she does put it on for special occasions. Because of her work in her art studio, she often has smudges of soot on her face and/or metal dust on her clothes.
Alex is no stranger to loss. Her father never came home from the Faerie Wars, and her mother died in a car crash when Alex was 17. As a result, she walls herself off to protect herself from pain. Alex approaches most situations with a mix of practicality and cynicism. She prefers anger to fear, and often lashes out when she finds herself in uncomfortable situations. She retreats to her art studio when she’s feeling stressed because working on her art tends to calm her and help her think, though that sometimes backfires. While Alex is afraid of commitment and has serious abandonment issues, deep down she longs for the kind of stability and connection she never had at home. She’s slow to open up to people, but once she decides to trust someone, she’s generous, fiercly loyal, and will do whatever it takes to protect the people she cares about. Sarcastic, resilliant, and with a slight martyr complex, Alex has to overcome her self-doubt and ignorance in order to realize her full potential. The first step to changing the world is changing her own perceptions.
Artistic - Alex studied studio art in college and graduated with a degree is metalsmithing. She makes her living as a mixed-media sculptor working primarily in metals, which she exhibits and sells through a local art gallery owned by James Abernathy. She also makes custom commission pieces including sculptures, jewelry, and chainmail. She often sketches or weaves chainmail when she wants to relax. Alex is classically trained in most drawing and painting techniques, and she has used just about every medium known to art at one time or another.
Physical - Alex is not a big fan of exercise for the sake of exercise, but her active lifestyle keeps her in good shape despite her love of carbs. She lives in the mountains and spends a lot of time hiking. She does an at-home yoga rountine most mornings, just to stay limber. She trains at an Aikido dojo in Boulder a couple times per week, where she is considered to be at an intermediate level at the beginning of Book 1. Metalsmithing often doubles as weight training, as she often swings a hammer to forge, giving her significant arm and grip strength.
Physical abilities after Book 1 [A Drop of Magic] Coming soon...
Magic - Alex does not realize she has any magic before the events of Book 1, but her innate abilities were leaking through even before finding out what she truly was. Her magical abilities develop over the course of the series. See below for more details:
Alex was ten years old when the fae came out of hiding, at which time her mother and father fought constantly over their views of magic and whether or not the fae should be allowed to live alongside humans. Her father left, determined to fight against the acceptance of magic. Alex waited years for him to return, but he never did. Once the Faerie Wars officially began, a man named Sol came and introduced himself as her father’s commanding officer. Her father had become a soldier. Later, Sol told them Alex’s father had died in combat, though no body was recovered. Sol continued to check in on Alex and her mother periodically, despite her mother moving them all over the country, and when Alex’s mother died in a car accident when Alex was seventeen, Sol became her legal guardian. Alex has a hard time trusting relationships, convinced that anyone she grows close to will inevitably be torn away.
Eventually, the humans and fae signed a peace treaty, ending the war, but Alex wasn’t sure how she felt about living side-by-side with fae. She hated the fae for being the reason her father left, and she hated her father for caring more about destroying magic than being with his family. With both her father and mother dead, Alex chose to ignore the issue, unable to choose a side in the argument that had driven her parents apart. Determined to ignore all things magic, she stuck her head in the sand and went to college, where she studied art and became a metalsmith. While at college, despite her best efforts to remain isolated, she formed friendships with three people: David Nolan, Maggie Hawthorne, and Aiden Daye.
With some financial help from Sol, Alex moved into a remote mountain cabin outside of Nederland, Colorado, where she could make her art in seclusion and show it in the Souled Fine Art Gallery in nearby Boulder, Colorado, which was owned by an attractive, enigmatic man named James Abernathy. Alex also helped her friend Maggie open a bookstore called Magpie Books, where she worked part time as a clerk in order to make ends meet and not become a total shut-in, but she can be a bit flaky and doesn’t always show up for her shifts on time. The bookstore also allowed her the opportunity to host a local artist exhibit to help support fellow artists.
Alex finally allowed herself to become part of a community. She made new friends, like Emma who sold coffee in the bookstore and Sophie who went on artist retreats with her. She still had trouble dating and never managed to stay in a romantic relationship longer than a month, much to Maggie’s annoyance since she kept setting Alex up on blind dates, but Alex didn’t mind being single. She had dinner every Tuesday with James to talk about art, and watched movies on Saturdays with David and Aiden. She even pseudo-adopted a stray cat that hung out on her property.
Life seemed to be going well until the day the police informed her that her good friend Aiden had been murdered. Suddenly, all the abandonment issues Alex had from her earlier life came crashing back, compounded by guilt that Aiden had called her the night he died and she hadn’t answered, forcing him to leave a cryptic message on her phone. That guilt, and the idea that she should have done more to protect her friend, drives her to collect and defend social misfits moving forward.
Father: Darren Carter - Alex's father left his family shortly after the fae came out of hiding, determined to eradicate magic from the Mortal Realm. Alex waited years for him to return, but he never did. He was later declared a casualty of the Faerie Wars. His body was never recovered.
Mother: Angie Blackwood - Alex's mother was an elementary school teacher who believed with her whole heart that everyone, no matter their background, deserves respect, compassion, and equal opportunities in life. She was killed in a car accident when Alex was seventeen when she hit a patch of ice after going out to pick up a Christmas tree. She survived the initial impact, but died in the hospital shortly after. Alex hasn't celebrated Christmas since.
Legal Guardian: "Uncle" Sol / Solomon Adams - Shortly after the Faerie Wars began, Sol introduced himself to Alex and her mother as Darren's commanding officer. He later delivered the news that Alex's father was dead. Sol continued to check in on Alex and her mother periodically, despite her mother moving them all over the country in an effort to find work, and when Alex’s mother died in a car accident when Alex was seventeen, Sol became her legal guardian. He paid for her to attend college, and helped finance both her house in the woods and Maggie's bookstore.
Alex assumes every relationship will end, sooner or later. Therefore, while she enjoys dating from time to time, she always holds her heart in reserve, never truly opening herself up, because connection brings pain when it all inevitably comes crashing down. She rarely sees anyone beyond a second date. Her longest relationship lasted three months. While Alex does occasionally feel a bit lonely, she's fiercely independent and unwilling to make herself vulnerable for the uncertain potential of love.
Friendship is incredibly important to Alex as the Magicsmith series develops. Alex has some grade "A" abandonment issues due to losing both her parents and moving a lot during her childhood. She fears making meaningful connections because she assumes that those connections will innevitably be broken at some point in the future, and she does not want to deal with the pain of being left behind again. Despite that, Alex has an deep desire to be a part of a stable, caring community. She does her best to balance these conflicting emotions by limiting herself to a small group of friends and keeping most of her interactions fairly superficial.
Aiden: One of the "Three Musketeers" that Alex was friends with in college. Aiden is killed at the beginning of Book 1 [A Drop of Magic]; it's his death that kicks off Alex's adventure and results in her being dragged into the world of magic and secrets.
Maggie: Maggie was a roommate in college. She's a complete bibliophile, and her dream was always to run a bookstore. When Alex and Maggie graduated, they went into business together to open Magpie Books. Maggie was able to pay Alex back for her seed money after a few years, so they're no longer partners, but Alex still works part time as a clerk at the bookstore, both to support her friend, make a little extra cash, and ensure she doesn't become a complete recluse.
David: Third of the "Three Musketeers" from college, David was the first person to draw Alex out of her shell. An outgoing person, David befriended Alex despite her prickly disposition. He later introduced Alex to his roommate Aiden, and the three became inseparable.
Emma: Emma runs the coffee shop that operates inside Magpie Books, where she sells pastries from her mother's bakery and makes the best lattes ever. Emma is irresistibly upbeat with a seemingly endless supply of energy and optimism that makes Alex smile no matter how dire the rest of her life gets.
James: James Abernathy owns and operates the Souled Art Gallery in Boulder. He saw one of Alex's public art pieces, tracked her down, and invited her to exhibit her sculptures in his gallery. They've worked together for a little over two years now and have a weekly dinner date during which they discuss art, business, and life in general. James is rich, refined, and beautiful. When they first met, Alex had a fierce crush on him that made her trip over her words and blush like a sunburn. She was never brave enough to act on those feelings, mostly because of her own self-esteem and commitment issues. She believes he's way out of her dating league, but she's happy to be his friend and artistic protegee.
Sophie: Alex met Sophie during a local artist retreat. The two hit it off and have stayed in touch because of their love of art, often taking road trips or nature hikes together in pursuit of artistic inspiration. Beyond art, the two have very little in common.
